I have an addiction! Anything that can enhance, alter, manipulate, complete a project using cloth or paper or a combination of the two is like a giant, powerful magnet! Try as I may, I cannot escape the pulling and tugging & all the ideas that take flight in my head!

Each time I go through all of my rubber stamps, I vow it is the LAST time to buy a stamp, any stamp, ever, ever, ever... then I go shopping for something totally unrelated and glance down the stamp aisle to spot a 40% off sale! As hard as I fight the urge, I find myself 'just looking'... then 'just touching', then justifying why just one more stamp will complete the collection of items I need for the next quilt, wall hanging, canvas, cloth doll, journal, inchie, postcard, letter or card, tote bag, jacket or sweatshirt.... those darn new clear stamps are just too yummy to pass up - especially when they are on sale!

DOES ANYONE ELSE HAVE THIS HAPPEN..... EVER???

To add to the collection I have had for years, I have discovered black gesso! Oh my... what a wonderful addition to any artist's toy box! Don't go there... if you have any of the weakness that I have described... don't go near the acrylics, gessos, gels... forget you ever heard of that section of anyplace you shop...

I have added fresh paint brushes, new white gesso, gel medium and a brand new black gesso, some clear stamps, a couple of fresh stamp pads (StaZon is a wonderful 'find' for permanent ink projects) to my studio.

Michaels has a great package deal on some nice sized canvases right now, so I added a few to my stock... I won't need much fabric and I need absolutely no new thread... I look forward to dabbling in a lot of mixed media during the year ahead while trying to use up a huge stockpile of beautiful fabrics. I will finish several quilt tops sometime early in the year and begin new ones. I will dye more fabric and have already purchased a full bolt of black Kona to discharge with bleach and the sun come warmer weather. I'm more confident about using the Shiva Paintsticks & all the beautiful Setacolors and acrylics I have accumulated...

I don't know what is in store for 2011 but I plan to find more quiet time for the Creator and for creating... the two go hand in hand for me... I pray that family & friends will surround me throughout the year ahead that I may offer a gift to each of them in some small way... by something I say, make, teach or share.

May the year ahead bring great joy and blessing for each and everyone who reads this blog. Travel some of this journey with me as I try harder to post more of the things that stir the creativity within me... share with me all that you are learning & trying in your art journey...

As you move forward... have fun - enjoy the journey!

Where Has Lynn Been?

Oh my, how long can one go without blogging before she is tossed into the blog bone pile? Well... aparently a very long time... I wasn't sure if I could find my page or not. Then there is the perverbial question 'where is my password'? (I am not a good speller, so if there is a misspell just use phonics & deal with it!)

Arriving at this spot I found lots of changes that could be made... BUT - I am proud to have come here before 2010 is completely gone, I will have blogged in 2010!

So, where have I been and what on earth have I been doing? Much too much to bore you with details. So, let's just hop into the fun stuff to report, the reason this page was created! I just hop from obsession to obsession in art and creativity. I never get tired of learning... does any artist?

This year I have continued to keep our postcard group going full speed with the help of a wonderful gal, Alice, who has just done a fabulous job with moderating & keeping fresh swaps going. Honestly, I think I would have had to abandon the whole thing and close the group without her. Thankfully, our 'family' stayed in tact and we will be even stronger in 2011.

We have an art group formed here in Indianapolis. We try to meet once a month. Whoever hosts the group also shares whatever creativity she has and demonstrates lots of techniques for us. We are able to experience 'hands on' fun with most demonstrations. Our group is growing so it is anyone guess how much longer we can meet in homes, but for the immediate future, that is what we are doing... that is, when we are not meeting at a local coffee shop or restaurant for show and tell and chatter.

I have taken a workshop from Esterita Austin... if you do not know what she does, go see her fabulous work! A fun, and very different workshop in mixed media is my latest 'obsession'. A local artist Jill Metz offered a workshop a few weeks ago. We all completed a canvas with all kinds of techniques. It is an exaggerated form of decoupage but it is NOT your grandmothers decoupage and I would encourage everyone who loves to play with paper, fabric, scissors, glue, paint, found objects, yadda, yadda, yadda.. to find a class or begin a search and step out of your comfort zone in 2011.

Early in the spring I visited with Phil Beaver in French Lick, IN. He is a gracious host. He has displayed and been a favorite at Paducah & Houston, he is a retired art teacher who has traveled internationally with his teaching techniques and wonderful quilted & handpainted art... he now has a studio built in back of his home where he does outstanding oil paintings of much of southern Indiana... a must see! If you EVER go through southern Indiana, you REALLY owe it to your self (and Phil) to stop by to say 'hello'.

I have made jewelry this year... yes, a real stretch from fabric, canvas and paint... delightful experience and one I want to continue. I have even made jewelry from old t-shirts. I've worked in clay and dabbled with the idea of ceramics... now that should get your interest!

I will begin posting info from our local gatherings & a few techniques in 2011. My goal is to post once a month as we gather locally and have fresh ideas & techniques. We started out to share postcards and ideas ... that has expanded to full size quilts down to tiny inchies, art quilts, totes, canvases, greeting cards, string art, sewing and stamping on everything from cardstock, paper, soda cans, boxes... you name it, we can stamp & color on anything! We paint, dye fabric... curious? Plan a weekend trip to Indy for one of our crazy get togethers OR just stay tuned for more info as 2011 unfolds.

Be blessed in this most blessed season. Remember the Reason for the season. Practice being grateful. Love someone who does not expect it or deserve it. Create something unexpected. Color outside the lines.

Have a Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year!

What Happened to Summer 2009?

Wow, what a fast summer this has been.

It seems I fell asleep, blinked & the summer vanished. The grandchildren are back in school and the more ritualistic school schedules have started so quickly it's hard to imagine that they ever stopped.

We have had a fun summer. Lots of family get togethers. Chances to learn new arts & crafts. Trip to the Children's Museum. Visit from daughter who lives out of state. While I never learned to make friendship bracelets in the 60's, I have now learned to make them for the grandchildren. Three of them know how to make their own so we are having lots of fun with all colors of embroidery floss & small charms.

I have started speaking to Quilt Guilds and small groups about the fun activity of fabric postcard swapping. Over the past 2 1/2 years I have now made, mailed & received more than 400 of these small fun pieces of art. I tell those who are at the meetings that I am the largest trunk show that they will ever see where they are allowed to touch & examine the small quilts up close and personal. I figure if they make it through the postal system, there isn't much to do to endanger them by a few loving hands. Several new members have joined ArtWeMail, so we will expand out talents & share even more in 2010.

Hope your summer was eventful and full of wonderful memories.

Learning to Weave Dreams

The Legend of the Dream catcher

There are as many different versions of the origin of the dream catcher as there are dream catchers. My favorite is one about an old woman who would sit quietly watching a spider spin. She loved watching the spider at work and the skill of its many legs. One day, her grandson came to visit, being afraid that the would bring harm to his grandmother, he went over to kill the spider. Grandmother stopped him. He asked her to explain why she would protect a spider but she didn’t answer, she only smiled.

After her grandson left, the spider thanked her for saving his life. "For many days you have watched me spin and weave my web," it told her. "You have admired my work. In gratitude for saving my life, I will give to you a very special gift." It then smiled and continued to weave his web.

When night fell and the moon cast its magical light on the spider's work, the web glisten with a silver glow in the window as it swayed gently with the breeze. The spider went to the old woman once again and said, "This is my gift to you. See it and learn it, for each web will snare bad dreams, allowing only good dreams to fit through the small hole in the center. The web will hold the bad dreams until morning until the sunlight burns them away. Keep the web with you forever so that only the good dreams will be remembered." From then until now, the legend of the secret of the dream catcher has been passed on to the next generation as has the dream catcher.

Dreams are often clues to what we are experiencing in life or thinking about in deeper parts of our soul – legends are often lessons or inspiration to bring knowledge, wisdom and peace. The combination of what this little legend represents is special to me as I pass each dream catcher on to a new home. My dream catcher is made with prayers for the future of the recipient. May all of your good dreams be blessed by God & flow through your future while every bad dream is evaporated with each new sunrise.

New Obsessions

What a wonderful summer full of memories & lots of time with family, especially those grandkids!

They bring out the little girl inside of me who never really wanted to go away or grow up. It's not about age, it's not about inspiration, it's not about having enough time... it's about being able to hear whispers that not everyone can hear... it can happen anytime day or night.

You know the whisper? The one the colored pencil, or crayon, or marker makes when you are in the middle of doing something else and ignoring them... 'hey, see me? I'll bet you and I can have a really fun time if you will stop what you are doing and find a piece of paper." No matter how hard I try to ignore the temptation I am overcome and suddenly I have cards & cards & more cards of new girlfriends!

I love drawing eyes. Our grandchildren have BIG eyes - BIG BLUE eyes... I can't draw every person with blue eyes because my sweet, dear friends have brown, hazel, and colors in between sparkling in their eyes. So, girlfriends are showing up on card stock for greeting cards and fabric for postcards! Drawing body details escapes my talents - so I draw what I can and enjoy the process... eventually I do put away the colored pencils, crayons, markers & chalk...in a box that can sit near my evening escape to my recliner... eventually I return to the things in life that must be 'attended to'.

It's the little whispers in life that interrupt me to keep the child alive inside of me for a lifetime... coloring outside the lines is my favorite part of life - living outside the box makes me smile & forces me to find new direction & learn new things - little whispers push me beyond my comfort zone

I'm about to move beyond my comfort zone of nearly 30 years and return to a very different workforce than I've ever been involved in - I will learn new things, meet new people, accept intreguing assignments & form new friendships. Days will be more demanding & less flexible... my prayer is that I never stop listening to whispers & finding time to add color to my life... and for my grandchildren & time to embrace new friendships!

Planting Seeds

These weeks keep running by so fast - this is not a complaint, it is because they are filled with the speed of little ones running under my feet like in the days of raising my own - this time, it's grandchildren. ..
Yesterday I took them outdoors and we planted some seeds (from packets). I was overwhelmed when I saw the analogy ... here we were planting tiny seeds to watch them grow - here I stood watching the tiny hands of the children push seeds into the fresh dirt... reality of how quickly the seeds will blossom reminds me of how quickly the tiny, seeds in front of me, dressed as children, will grow and move on ... take time to embrace the 'seeds' in your life today - water them with tears if necessary - it's all a part of the passing of seasons... each one bringing fresh blossoms & radiant new beginnings! New life in any form is a reminder of how small we are and how little we actually control.... The group has grown and so has the talent. We recently did a card exchange in honor of Big Bird's Birthday which was March 20th. The farthest he has come to me so far has been Australia!

Do you know that he is called something different in other parts of the world? Just take a look:Brazil: Garibaldo *Mexico: Abelardo *China: Da Niao *Spain: at first Caponata * / but now Paco PicoPortugal: Poupas *France: Toccata *German: BiboThe Netherlands: neef Jan

There are actually 17 different versions of this big, lovable creation!

The yellow postcards have been a hit with the local postal clerks. I have a wonderful team of postal clerks where I live & mail. That's not the case for other 'swappers'... there are some grouchy folks out there who just have a challege with others who have fun & smile a lot! Especially if they have a little bit of authority! We better not go there -

I DO love having a blog although I have to admit, I forget to do anything with it. Obviously, the mind has not wandered to this page since January! I'll try to do a bit better but no big promises as this is a stress free endeavor (and believe me, I have plenty of stress other places so don't send me any).

Today at 5:30 a.m. there was an earthquake in Indiana, 5.2 whatever that means in terms of severity... 7 or 8 aftershocks so far - hard to believe! I slept right through it. I'm disappointed. I would have at least liked to be able to talk about my experience but I'm afraid I would have to make up stories based on the local news.... it's easy to memorize the process as they have all repeated the EXACT words for the event - over & over & over & over... wouldn't it be nice if the news teams around the world would find some really positive, encouraging, fun, interesting news and repeat it over & over & over? How about giving the same exaggerrated energy to all the wonderful events on our local, national & international homefronts that they give to the thugs & low life - to be in the news you either have to go to Hollywood & do something totally stupid & irresponsible or be a thief, pervert or gangster! Too bad that someone isn't brave enough to change the profile of reporting.... sounds like a good assignement, eh?

Rambling is work so I'll keep this a short entry - lots to do as I am spring cleaning - throwing out 'stuff'.... enjoying seeing open space on shelves and empty drawers - something theraputic in all of this.

Happy Spring to all - I hope blessings are blooming everywhere you go & if by chance they are not - YOU plant the first one!

Separating the Necessary from the Urgent

This weekend we have spent time with dear friends of nearly 30 years.

One of those friends said goodbye to his mother for the last time on Wednesday. The once strong, energetic, productive woman who had spent her years on a farm was now at peace with the world.

I listened to conversations and watched as each person came by her to make their final statements about her impact on their life and on the lives of their children and grandchildren. She had time for a lot of generations. She used her sewing machine to the max as many testified of the clothing, quilts & crafts she had blessed them with through the years. She planted & harvested, cooked & canned, fed the multitude. She lived long enough to recognize and practice the necessary above the urgent and know the difference.

I wonder what would happen this day if each of us took 30 minutes to do something necessary instead of urgent. Would we recognize the difference? I think that the necessary takes practice & discipline above the urgent.

My parents are gone, there were words left unsaid on both sides. There was a lifetime of love mixed with a lifetime of trying to figure each other out. A lifetime of memories, a lifetime of learning & growing. 50 years? 60 years? 70 years? 80........ whatever time they had then or we now is still only a fleeting moment.

Today I am taking at least 30 minutes to really analyze the difference in the necessary & the urgent and try to separate them. I am scheduling a time to write to those I care about, call someone who is alone, give away some things I've been holding on to. Today I am taking time to embrace those I love... yes, we do have to schedule the necessary.

The urgent is disrespectful and will get as much time as possible.

Today I will reflect on what I might say to encourage someone right here, right now instead of saving the whole flowery speech for a quiet, hurting gathering at a funeral home.

Today I will celebrate life as deeply as I have mourned death. Freida understood the purpose & place for the old rugged cross - Today I will be thankful for her life and her lessons taught in her quiet, thoughtful, productive life. Today I will take time to appreciate the old rugged cross and the promises made there – today I will begin practicing recognizing, respecting & responding to the necessary, above the urgent.

HAPPY NEW YEAR

May the year ahead be filled with prayer, peace, joy, hope, health, family, friends & fun - may the memory of the year behind you be only of those things that brought great comfort and encouragement & may you find every opportunity to give thanks in all things.
May the bad events & any memories of them be cast as far as the deepest sea, never to return.
May you find time to entertain your inner child and color outside the lines!
Happy New Year and welcome 2008!

What will you collect in 2008?

Collections? Art? Crafts? Hobbies? What kind of collections have interested you through the years?Eons ago, I collected butterfly pictures for a short time, cute, but not as interesting as owls. Oh my! It is unimagineable what you open yourself up to when you start "collecting" anything and other people find out. Now, I don't want to sound unappreciative, I did receive some nice things occassionally - BUT - mostly things no one else wanted under any circumstances. The "collection" ended after our small children took a few coins and went to some neighborhood garage sales! When they returned they had a dark brown, badly carved, badly painted, even more badly fired, ceramic owl that stood about 2 feet tall. A neighbor (who is likely still laughing) sold it to them for a penny and helped them make me a gift card to go with it. That awful owl stood on my fireplace for nearly a year before someone knocked it off with a basketball - it was the ONLY time I applauded a basketball being bounced in the house. I kissed the kids and kissed the basketball. We still laugh at the experience. Need I tell you that I stopped collecting anything!

Well, let's say I stopped collecting until more recent days. In June of 2007 I joined my first postcard exchange after reading about those little jewels I wanted some of my own. I joined a large swap, having no clue the time or thought that had to be put into the creation. After making my first 50 in less than 2 months, I needed a break... however, I couldn't stop making them and I missed pretty mail in my mailbox. I had even made friends with our local postoffice clerks & mail carriers and they were all missing the pretty mail! I started my own Yahoo group - ArtWeMail- to have the option of smaller swaps. Today there are more than 60 members. It has actually turned into much more than a hobby and collection. We have become a group of international friends who enjoy sharing our hobby, our talents, our interests, our families & friends and our prayers.
Thank you everyone in ArtWeMail for making 2007 a wonderful journey while we all had so much fun together. Today I collect fabric postcards from all over the world. There are no ugly ones. Each one has been held by the hands of someone who loves what she is doing and shares what she has with others.Isn't that a wonderful way to link in each other's lives & cultures? We have sought out what we have in common and built wonderful stories & memories. We hold a spot in each other's homes and in each other's hearts! No negotiations, no treaties, no contracts, no pressure. We have flexible deadlines and open ended freedom to be creative all for the price of a stamp, we fly all over the world! May 2008 be filled with as much fun and friendship as we have experienced in 2007 for everyone who gives themselves permission to find what their neighbors have in common and build on it!
Oh, by the way, I collect pretty postal art and new friends. It has snowed 5" and iced the roads to the mall and craft stores. The weather has changed our travel plans. A day to give thanks for freedom, family, friends, blessings... a day to build memories and take pictures. Thanksgiving sort of kicks off the Christmas season as we begin talking about gifts we will search for and when to start putting up the tree.
Up at 4:30 on Friday morning to go shopping with our daughter. Insane? Maybe.
I wouldn't trade my sleep for all our chatter and giggles. We made memories as we watched all of the other crazies - some had been up all night waiting for "the perfect bargain". Not us, we had a few things to look for but we were neither one working as hard as the crowds around us. It was a morning for just the two of us. Kids were in bed at Gramma's house, Papa ready to act like he was sleeping when they would run into his bedroom making noise and trying to surprise him.

We found a Starbucks open by 5:30.

All of our serious shopping was over by 7:00. We managed to find a few other things to go look at and do and touch and smell while we continued to catch up on life. We came home at 9:00 a.m. for a fun filled day with children and family.
Our son was here with his 3 little girls and a new puppy. A Swissie - 16 wweeks old and 36 lbs. More giggles, more conversation, more memories.

Friday evening more family joined us to help celebrate GG's (Great Grandmother)
85th birthday.

Saturday, Papa finally build a fire in the firepit - something that had only been a dream and conversation until Saturday. The glow of the embers in the fire could not match the glow on those little faces as they helped Papa prepare to fix hot dogs and marshmallows.

Thanksgiving, a holiday? Maybe for some but for us it is a lifestyle. It's nice to have a holiday to illuminate all we have to be grateful for but I'd like to think that our family and friends know that thanksgiving is a part of our hearts each time we think of them!

Time keeps on tickin' tickin' tickin' into the future

If you recognize that song you are as old as I am! Thats something to think about - way old enough to vote - not quite older than dirt but swiftly approaching.

Age used to scare me, now it delights me. Time does keep on tickin and allowing me to recognize the things that are important over the emergencies that others create for me (or I create for myself). Taking time out for friends and family seems to be at the top of my list these days. Unfortunately, it is not at the top of some of their lists so there are still limitations.

We have started to lose friends to health & age associated diseases - not to be morbid or sad, it is a part of the process of life. It is also a reality check to make sure that we are enjoying each day with those we love and appreciate and creating GOOD memories - everyday is a memory - what kinds are we making?

I like to think that sending pretty things through the mail brightens someone's otherwise dull day. I like to believe that because I care I have brought a smile to someone's face who may have forgotten that it is OK to be happy even when life is a little challenging. I love to know that I have been a positive influence in our grandchildren's lives and have spent the time with them that they will cherish for years to come and pass that same time on to their own children and grandchildren.

Several months ago I began swapping postcards with ladies from all around the world. A few weeks ago I shared that experience at a dinner. I am now scheduled to teach the art of fabric postcard making and swapping. This has been a fun journey. I am learning that women around the world have more in common than not. Isn't it amazing how much we can get to know one another on very simple levels through our hobbies & interests. What a novel idea - being interested in other people... caring about helping each other to grow and learn more instead of competing and comparing.

September 17, 2007

Is it just me or do weekends seem like a blur?

We are blessed to have 5 grandchildren. We traveled to Ohio to see 2 of them play soccer this weekend. Between the traffic & wrong turns, we managed to miss most of the soccer games, for which we were most disappointed - it is a real treat to watch those little legs move so fast and with such purpose (that is when our grandson wasn't taking time out to grab a handful of grapes, he's 5 - grapes are more interesting than sports).

This past week has been another adventure full of sewing fabric art and making baby gifts. I love making baby gifts - it is a message that God thinks life is pretty special and has given us permission to continue on! I've also received and sent postcards all around the globe. Friendships are being formed through simple little pieces of art that women from every country and culture seem to enjoy. Over the next several weeks I will begin posting pictures of things I have mailed, things I have received and techniques for many of the projects.

I hope that as you stumble across this site you will be inspired and encouraged to share your work with me as well. I have a little 15 mo. old visitor. In fact I have this same little visitor every Monday now though the schoolyear. She is our baby granddaughter, napping at the moment but will wake soon. We will laugh, dance & play our way through the day and build one more day of memories.

I honestly don't know for sure why I am "blogging". I suppose I am always looking to learn something new with all these new found toys in the electronic, high tech world. I'm not very high tech - I just love learning something new. I honestly don't know how long this blog will be in existence as it is more of an experiment than anything - a hobby - not a career, much like my art endeavors.

Blessings to all who enter here - love, peace & prosperity to you as you share the same blessings with others.

Have fun - Enjoy the journey

Returning from a long weekend

Wonderful memories are created whenever family gathers. There are no memories as precious as the ones created with and by children, the weekend was filled with children.

Sunday was another family picnic which provided great opportunity to collect memories of giggles, screams, fun stories and good food. Most of all it provided another day to hug those we love and appreciate the time together. We missed some who could not be there and hope for their participation next time.

Today I'm taking a little bit of time to try to figure out what to do with my own blog. I am learning one important thing so far - I know that I don't know much about this whole adventure but it is another thing I like learning in this wonderful world of technology.

I look forward to sharing pictures, stories, hobbies and getting to know new friends who share the same interests.

Greetings Pretty Postal Art

Pretty Postal Art has been created to connect with other fiber artists who enjoy exchanging postcards and other small fiber art creations.
I am hopeful that everyone who visits will share and glean from techniques and experiences with their fiber creations.
